The concept of the Sensonus Institute for Sonic Research reflects our broad interest in the study of sound in its various contexts of meaning - in the everyday experience of our environment, as a medium of artistic expression in music and other forms of sound design, as an object of reference for technological developments and, last but not least, as a facilitator of learning experiences in various educational contexts.
On the one hand, the concept of sound research is intended to capture this perspectival diversity of acoustic situations and environments by helping to characterize them as equally relevant approaches to the acoustic realm of our lives that exist side by side.
On the other hand, it aims to change the perspective on one's own musical-artistic practice in the narrower sense, namely as research into new approaches and procedures relating to sound design and forms of expression in connection with the possibilities of communicating them in different teaching and learning contexts.
This also means shaping this mediation outside the IfK Sensonus location, for example in cooperation with schools and other educational institutions, where new learning situations and experiential spaces can be initiated as part of temporary media education projects that place listening at the center of creative and playful knowledge transfer.
Musician Dorothea Krishnabhakdi and media artist Stefan Loehr have been working together for several years on various projects in the fields of sound art, experimental sound design and media education. Dorothea Krishnabhakdi (born 1972) studied jazz saxophone in Amsterdam and Utrecht (NL) where she also played in various ensembles with international musicians. Returning to Berlin in 2004, she explored electronic music, launching the sound art project Lore in 2005. She has composed film scores, produced radio plays and expanded her work in the fields of media education, field recording and improvised music. For many of her projects she has received various scholarships. Now based in Vallendar, she teaches saxophone, clarinet and jazz theory while running Sensonus in cooperation with Stefan Löhr.
Stefan Loehr (born 1971) is a sound artist as well as a classically trained instrumentalist with a master's degree in musicology and philosophy. At the same time, he began working as an audio programmer for the internationally renowned light and sound artist Hans Peter Kuhn, as well as developing his own media artworks and installations.
